Senator of the State of North Dakota (2013-2019)

Heidi Heitkamp is the first woman ever elected to be a U.S. Senator from North Dakota.

Senator Heitkamp grew up in a large family in the small town of Mantador, ND. Alongside her six brothers and sisters, she learned the value of hard work and responsibility, leading her to choose a life of public service.

She worked as an attorney for the Environmental Protection Agency before serving two terms as North Dakota State Tax Commissioner and two terms as North Dakota Attorney General as a member of the North Dakota Democratic-Nonpartisan League Party.

As attorney general, she was a leader in the national suit against the nations four largest tobacco companies, culminating in the landmark Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, which required the companies to pay restitution to the states and transformed their marketing practices.

Senator Heitkamp saw firsthand the slow erosion of rural support for Democrats in rural states, which led to a landslide victory for President Donald Trump. After leaving Congress, she co-founded the One Country Project to reopen the rural dialogue between voters and Democrats and help remind Democrats that rural voters have traditionally been part of the Democratic coalition.
